Flirt :: the air and opportunity between God and me

Does God flirt with us? You might not think so at first. But when we begin to look at Jesus after the resurrection, we see Jesus showing up and then quickly disappearing. He reveals pieces of who He is without spelling out systematic ideas. In many ways, He flirts. In this series, we’ll look at four of these flirty moments from Jesus’ life and seek to discover how His heart reaches into the air and opportunity between God and us.

THE HEARTBEAT OF FLIRT
We love to flirt — to show interest, to try something new, to attract something better, and to imagine what could be.We flirt when we entertain ideas or possibilities or relationships with other people without really committing. We even flirt with God sometimes — living in the air and the opportunity between Him and us.

But does God flirt with us? You might not think so at first. But when we begin to look at Jesus after the resurrection, we see Him showing up and then quickly disappearing. He reveals pieces of who He is without spelling out systematic ideas. In many ways, He flirts.

In this series, we’ll look at four of these flirty moments from Jesus’ life. As we see these moments play out, we will find ourselves flirting with things like joy, passion, surprise, and mission. In these flirty moments, we’ll seek to discover how the heart of Jesus reaches into the air and opportunity between God and us.
ABOUT THE ART
The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.
--Dorothy Parker

Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises.
--Demosthenes

Before my wife was my wife (when we were still in college), and even before we were dating – when we were just “talking” (I still don’t know what “talking” means) – she would always flirt with me. She’ll say that she didn’t (but she is a liar). She figured out my class schedule and would just “happen to bump into me” on my way to class (she would say she didn’t, but remember – liar). And then a funny thing happened. I started to look forward to those encounters.

Those flirty moments only lasted a few minutes, but they always left me wanting more. It was in those moments, in the air and opportunity between her and me, that love was sparked and that a deep relationship began to grow. Those small chance meetings became the beginning of a great relationship.

I was always reaching, searching in the space between Kim (my wife) and me for those distinct encounters, just like the balloons in the artwork are reaching to the heavens, desperate for Jesus’ flirty interaction. You could say that when it comes to our relationships with God, we each have a balloon, and the only limits our balloons have is how high we are willing to extend them and how tightly we insist on holding on. So go, fly balloons and wait for the subtle wind of Jesus to blow through. It could be the beginning, or perhaps the maturing, of a great relationship.

SESSION OUTLINE
Session One
Heartache: Flirting with Joy
John 20:11-18
We begin our Flirt series with heartache. We feel this heartache by joining Mary in her tears at Jesus' tomb. Then we will discover that, because of Jesus' resurrection, we can find joy in the midst of heartaches by seeing our sorrow through God's tomorrow.

Session Two
Heartburn: Flirting with Passion
Luke 24:13-34
In this session, we feel our hearts burn by joining the men on the road to Emmaus. As we listen, learn, and feel the burn, we see that our hearts can burn with passion for God when we soak in God's presence.

Session Three
Heartthrob: Flirting with Surprise
John 20:19-31
In this session, we see how our hearts throb when we're surprised by God and by our relationships. We will discover that when we let loose what's been locked down, we open a door through which God can surprise us at any time, just as He surprised Thomas and the other disciples.

Session Four
Heartbeat: Flirting with Mission
Acts 1:1-11
In this session, we find the heartbeat of our mission, and we learn that we need to pass on what's been passed on. We don't know exactly when Jesus is coming back. But until He does, we have a mission to share the joy, passion, and surprise in our relationship with God with the world.
