God Is...
The question at the heart of this study is, "When I think about God, what am I thinking about?" All of us probably understand some truths about God, but most of us haven't come close to seeing the whole picture.

THE HEARTBEAT OF GOD IS...
What’s the most important thing about you?
All of us would answer this question in different ways… Your answer might be your height or your heritage or your hobby. My answer might be my sense of humor or my sense of style or my sense of community. Or your friends’ answers might be how they use their talents or how they spend their time or how they plan their future. But maybe there’s something about us as people that’s more important than any of these things — how we think about God. Maybe the most important thing about a person is what that person thinks about when that person thinks about God. If that’s true — even partially — then what we think about God is a huge deal. And that’s why in this series, we’re going to try to find out who and what and how God really is. As we look at God from four different perspectives, we will start to get a better picture of all that God is. ABOUT THE ART
Sometimes I think we're alone. Sometimes I think we're not. In either case, the thought is staggering. --R. Buckminster Fuller
Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.
--Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
What I think about God is the most important thing about me, and I’ve spent much of my life incredibly uninformed. Trying to understand who/what/why/how God is always seemed daunting at best to me – which was a direct result of how small a picture of God I had. God isn’t so hard to find. He’s around every corner, in every city (yes, even those cities), in the skies, in the seas, in our homes … but … We usually see God without knowing that what we are seeing is God. (I know I did.) Once you realize that what you are seeing is God, and once you start noticing all of the different ways God is, then you’ll find that they all point to a picture of God that is always bigger/better/more beautiful than you ever thought it would be. (I know I did.) ![]() SESSION OUTLINE
Session One
God is . . . Extraordinary
Isaiah 40:12-18
As we begin to think about who God is, we first come to the realization that God is extraordinary. He is beyond any thought we could have of Him. God is greater than our imagination.
Session Two
God is . . . Ordinary
John 14:1-11
God is ordinary. He is with us and near us all the time. But because God came to earth underdressed, God is less than our expectations. This means that we must change our faulty expectations so that we can recognize the God who is closer than we think.
Session Three
God is . . . Lover
Judges 10:6-16
It may be surprising to hear, but God is our lover. He chooses to be emotionally involved with us, and so God is affected when He is rejected. As we follow God and develop a relationship with our Lover, we must realize that we need to go commit to God with our whole hearts.
Session Four
God is . . . Other
Isaiah 6:1-8
God is other. He is different than us because He is holy and we are not. When we experience that difference, we can’t help but say “Woe is me.” But God is different so He can make a difference, and He wants us to move from “Woe is me” to “Send me.” So our holy God reaches out to us with grace to purify us and send us out to join Him in making a difference in the world.
