For many of us, normal Christianity is comfortable and secure, isolated, and based on allthe evils we don’t do. But what if our norm isn’t normal to God? What if God isn’t satisfied for us to settle for normal in our lives?
Our world needs Christians to be more than disciplined, more than moral, and more than honest - our world needs Christians to be blessings.
If you have the courage to redefine normal, or if you want to have the courage, come on this journey with us. We don’t claim to have all the answers, because we are on this journey as well. But from just a few steps ahead, we can tell you it is the adventure of a lifetime.

"Thinking again?"
the Duchess asked, with another dig of her sharp little chin.
"I've a right to think,"
said Alice sharply, for she was beginning to feel a little worried.
"Just about as much right," said the Duchess, "as pigs have to fly...."

--From Lewis Carrol’s Alice’s Adventures in wonderland
I wish there was more absurdity in life . . . and not of the gym socks, popped collars, and aviator glasses variety. I want talking bananas, silverware with little personalities, cows that do the dishes, and of course (hint, hint) pigs that fly - when the impossible happens and the laws of nature are turned upside down, normal isn’t normal anymore. This sudden loss of cabin pressure in our brains creates a visual vortex where our imaginations are forced to imagine once again. Our right to think is restored, our paradigms shift and “normal” will never be “normal” again.
That said, I invite you to take a tour of the Redefining Normal Pig Factory where the industrial assembly line thoughtlessly churns out “normal” pigs. Confined, limited, restrained, and robotic this mechanical metaphor serves as social and religious commentary on our various institutions that manufacture mediocrity. But never fear, when all seems lost and mediocrity the mainstay, enter our heros: The Flying Pigs(ta da). Formerly unsatisfied assembly line pigs (oink oink), the flying pigs defy convention, routine, and ceremony (and physics)and choose to live in a world not defined by silly things like gravity, biology, and normalcy. The flying pigs challenge us with an obscene freedom and inspire within us a dangerous ability to break free and redefine normal.

Session One
Challenging the Norm: Normal isn't Normal
Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:14-21
For many of us, normal Christianity is about saying no to many things. But this is merely a half-gospel. As we look at Jesus’ mission statement for His life in this lesson, we discover that normal isn’t normal, because Jesus calls us to wake up to a life of yes.
Session Two
Redefining Normal Faith: Faith moves
Luke 18:18-27
Normal isn’t normal when it comes to faith. Instead of being stale and stagnant, faith is normal when faith moves. God calls us to get in the wheelbarrow and move with Him to a new kind of normal Christian life.
Session Three
Redefining Normal Hope: Hope sees
Ezekiel 37:1-14
In this lesson, we get a stirring picture of hope. Ezekiel saw God bring dry, dead bones to life. Like Ezekiel, we discover that hope sees a different reality not only for tomorrow but for today as well.
Session Four
Redefining Normal Love: Love gives
1 Corinthians 13:1-7, 13
In this lesson, we reflect with the apostle Paul on the love that God has given us. As we do, we discover that love gives what it has received.
Room 1228 workbooks contain listening guides that students can use during small group sessions, and they also have four bonus devotions that students can use to further experience and understand what they’re learning. These workbooks are perfect for use at camps, retreats, and Disciple Nows as well as in small groups or Sunday School classes that are using a Room 1228 theme.
